Don’t Be Amazing. Be Consistent.

When we think of great athletes we conjure up an image of someone with a powerful physique and a strong sense of determination. When we think of great public speakers we think of someone who is well dressed and gives off an aura of confidence. When we think of great writers we think of someone who is able to convey ideas and thoughts clearly and effortlessly. When we think of people who are wildly successful at any craft we often think they were simply born with an incredible talent and that it was their fate to become amazing. But that’s not true.

No one is simply born as an incredible public speaker. It is a skill that takes years and years of effort and repeated failures to cultivate. But the wonderful truth is that anyone can become a great public speaker. It just takes consistency. Consistent practice and the ability to recognize that failure will occur at some point is vital in becoming phenomenal at any craft.

A large percentage of people will never become amazing at any craft. This isn’t because they lack the capability to become amazing. It is because they believe they must be amazing to start with. Most people believe that in order to master a craft you have to be born with some special talent or ability. While it is true that some people are naturally better at certain crafts than others, anyone can master a skill with enough consistency.

Factors that influence your ability to master a craft:

How much work you put in: 80%

Natural born ability: 10%

Resources available to you: 10%

In general, the only factor that truly determines your ability to master a craft is how hard you are willing to work at that craft. Of course some people are born with more resources available to them to help them master a craft. Of course not everyone is born with the same set of skills or inherent ability. But the greatest predictor of mastery is simply how much effort you are willing to put towards honing your craft. You do not have to be born amazing, you just need to develop a mindset of consistency.

If you start working out 5 days per week and drink a gallon of water per day and eliminate most junk food from your diet, it does not matter who you are – you will lose weight. To lose weight, you do not have to be born with some natural ability to lose weight, you just have to be willing to put in the work to lose the weight.

Success is a result of actions. Plain and simple. No matter who you are, if you consistently work towards mastering a craft you will become amazing over time. Natural born ability will not make you successful. Consistency will make you successful.

You don’t have to be special. You just have to be willing to work hard. You don’t have to be amazing. You just have to be consistent.
